Anti-”gay” rant
I’m only going to say this once: don’t use “gay,” or any related word, as a term of derision.
“PHP is gay!”
“… some stupid fag on the mailing list …”
Just don’t.
I don’t want to hear your protestations that the word you used has nothing to do with the term commonly used for homosexuality. For one thing, you’re wrong, and for another thing, it doesn’t matter. All that matters is that, almost certainly, someone listening to you now thinks you’re a jerk. And if you are absolutely 100% certain that every single one of the other totally heterosexual geek boys you hang out with agree with you, you’re probably wrong there too, on both counts.

What a bigotted, intolerant viewpoint. Unless the writer is God, which it would appeear that they think they are.
Thank you, thank you. Please ensure that your prayers are accompanied by a suitable cash donation.

Thank you very much for writing this. It’s something I’ve wanted to say to people for a very long time.
that definition is gay u have to understand how the word is being used.
I’m amazed that this actually had to be said, but I guess that’s why we need etiquette sites in the first place. Personal feelings or beliefs about homosexuality are irrelevant in this case, as it’s just astonishingly poor manners. These must be the same people who “Jew down” the salesman when they buy a car, or “nigger-rig” their old one when the trunk lid won’t stay down. Expand your vocabulary, people. A professional should be easily distinguishable from a sailor, even by telephone.
Ideally NOT by the sailor being better spoken…
While we’re on it, you use the verb ‘to suck’ as an expression of derision in 2/11’s entry. That seems particularly inappropriate to me considering how wonderful it is to be sucked and the extreme love and gratitude I feel towards those who have done so.
ok, for 90% of the people who say among friends, “that’s gay”, “stop being gay”, “Jew down”, “nigger-rig”, are not using these terms to be offensive/racist as people like you think. They are just sayings, cliches, phrases, that are used for the same reason as “hot as hell”, “when pigs fly”, “screwed over.” I know, your outraged at this premise. Political Correctness sucks, you have to walk on eggshells.
People who use these cliches and phrases should learn some new ones.
Offensive, racist, whatever - it’s stupid and bad language in any case.
Bad language as in “I am too daft to come up with words to describe what I mean,” not as in “don’t do that.”
If you mean to say “that event was for homosexuals only”, calling it a gay event is perfectly right. If you want to tell how unimpressive, boring, and lacking of style it was, then say so!
