Offensive, racist, whatever - it's stupid and bad language in any case. Bad language as in "I am too daft to come up with words to describe what I mean," not as in "don't do that." If you mean to say "that event was for homosexuals only", calling it a gay event is perfectly right. If you want to tell how unimpressive, boring, and lacking of style it was, then say so! People who use these cliches and phrases should learn some new ones.
