The woeful state of geeky etiquette blogging. Dammit.
Since I’ve been writing GE I’ve been keeping an eye out for other etiquette sites. I track the del.icio.us tag, keep an eye on Technorati, and google regularly. And you know what I find? Heaps and heaps of articles about wedding etiquette, and a surprising amount about urinal etiquette or threesome etiquette — presumably because that’s the stuff that does the rounds on the social networking sites and everyone links to — but not nearly as much as I might’ve expected that’s on topic here.
But among all the cruft, there’s a slow trickle of interesting stuff:
- Some thought-provoking posts about online community, such as Some Community Tips for 2007 by Metafilter founder, Matthew Haughey, or Cory Doctorow’s recent article on How To Keep Hostile Jerks From Taking Over Your Online Community, that often touch on the etiquette issue.
- A bunch of career stuff with some degree of geek and/or etiquette relevance: today it was the discovery of the book Leading Geeks: How to Manage and Lead the People Who Deliver Technology; the author’s website is leadinggeeks.com and has some interesting articles.
- Articles about email etiquette. There’s been a surge of them lately in the wake of the publication of Send: The Essential Guide to Email for Office and Home but I don’t have a copy yet (part of the problem of being a wide ocean away from Amazon.com) so I can’t speak as to whether it’s any good or just states the obvious.
- Etiquette articles pertaining to particular websites or services, such as those on Digg etiquette (at digitalsoap) or this wiki page on Twitter etiquette
- The odd specialised etiquette blog: Librarian Etiquette for example. (Librarians are mostly geeks of some sort, in my experience.)
I just hope there are people out there writing about World of Warcraft etiquette or Second Life etiquette. Actually, I’ll cover WoW sometime — drop me a line if you’re a regular player and have thoughts on the matter.

thanks for the plug! too bad it never hit the front page because it got dugg down as “inaccurate”…would have been nice
Matt: I’m just happy there are other people blogging about etiquette. They could say that you should wear raw liver on your head when meeting the Queen and I’d still be happy :)
