When I lived in Sydney (for a looooong time) I used to stay that when a Sydneysider accepted an invitation there was usually (always?) an unspoken sub-text, as in "Too right, I'll be there (unless I get a better offer in the meantime)". One now prominent citizen and captain of industry once stood me and my partner up, waiting for him in a restaurant for dinner and when I rang him the next day to find out what happened some member of staff told me he'd actually been in Melbourne. Never heard from him again and don't need to. Up here in the Northern Rivers/Gold Coast, people just turn up, no sweat. The Smoke's a great place to visit, but. :) Some people would not see a need for such sensitivity.
