They're friendly and unambiguous, useful for times when someone isn't likely to hear my (usually) quiet voice. Well, I should say that they're friendly and unambiguous in America. In Turkey, the A-Ok gesture has a very different meaning. I knew this before I went, which only made it more embarrassing when I inevitably slipped up and used it because I realized my error immediately. It was awkward.
